Frequently asked questions

What is a tincture?

A tincture is a liquid herbal extract created by soaking berries, leaves, flowers, bark, and roots of one or multiple plants in food-grade alcohol. Alternatives to tinctures are vinegars and glycerites, which are herbal extracts using vinegar or vegetable glycerine
rather than alcohol. While tinctures are suitable for children due to the low alcohol content in each dose, they aren’t as sweet as glycerites, and might not be well tolerated by young ones.

Despite tinctures not being as sweet as their glycerite cousins, they offer a much longer shelf life and powerful extraction abilities. Alcohol is one of the best extractors out there, so every bit of goodness from the plants is pulled out to form a concentrated liquid that is quickly absorbed by your body, making it the ideal choice for most people.

We don’t recommend tinctures for pregnant and breastfeeding women however, but not from the miniscule amount of alcohol in each dose (which is compared to the same amount as in vanilla extract or an overripe piece of fruit), but because of the herbs, which may not be suitable.

It takes 6 weeks to create a tincture, and daily jar shaking to ensure every herb is covered.

What does it taste like?

Each tincture has a delicate taste when diluted but is much stronger when taken alone. It ranges from liquorice to herbaceous, depending on the tincture. We think it’s very pleasant in a glass of water, but if you don’t enjoy those flavours, add more water or juice to dilute it further.

How often to take it, and how much?

However often you need it. Three times a day is average, but you can adjust this depending on how you feel.

As for how much, you can squeeze one to three dropperfuls under your tongue or with your favourite drink. We love adding it to plain water.

When taking a tincture for the first time, it’s best to take a small dose first (15 drops, which is a little less than a dropperful) to see how you feel. If you feel little to no effects after 20 to 30 minutes, take another 15 drops. Repeat again if the result is the same after another 20 to 30 minutes and observe the cumulative effects of all doses. Take no more doses for at least a few hours.

Can I take it with other tinctures at the same time?

Yes, you can. Start with a low dose and see how you feel, then adjust as needed.

Will I get drunk?

No, you won't! The amount of alcohol in a dosage is the same amount that's in an overripe piece of fruit or vanilla extract. Even if you drank the entire bottle, we'd be more concerned about the level of herbal extract than the alcohol content.

How many servings in one bottle?

If you are using it every day and at the maximum dose, it will last you about two weeks. If you only take it occasionally, or at a lower dose, it will last one month.

What’s the cloudy stuff at the bottom on the bottle?

Some varieties of tincture have more of this "cloud" than others, but it’s nothing to be worried about. The cloud is just tiny bits of ginger, ashwagandha, or other herb that slipped through our mesh bags when processing. Just give your bottle a shake before use to evenly distribute the particles.

How long do tinctures last for?

Because alcohol has a long shelf life, we label each tincture with a 2 year best before date from the day of bottling. Many people have reported that their tinctures have lasted many years beyond that, so you be the judge of how your tincture looks and tastes after 2 years.

Take note of how it looks, smells and tastes now, and keep this in mind if leaving it on the shelf for longer than 2 years. If the colour seems off, or it smells bad, don’t use it.
Make sure to store your tincture in a dry, cool area of your home to ensure it lasts as long as possible. Your pantry, for example, would be an ideal place.

Do you really plant a tree with every order?

We sure do! We've partnered with Greenspark, a company that enables us to give a portion of our profits to offset 10kg of CO2, rescue 8 plastic bottles, and plant a tree with every order. So, by placing an order through our store, you're helping the planet. Thank you!
